Turner Signs – Drytac Polar Grip

Written by Aaron Burton on October 3rd 2019

A school in Doncaster, UK, has had a makeover in time for the new academic year thanks to Turner Signs and products from Drytac supplied by Sabur.

Turner Signs was approached by a teacher at Hall Cross Academy – who had seen the Barnsley-based family signage business’s work on Instagram – regarding a large project to transform the building. The secondary school is starting the autumn term with a new headteacher, so a new look was appropriate to a fresh start this September.

“We needed strong adhesive for the wall graphics installed on brickwork, so Joe at Sabur Digital recommended Polar Grip. I applied a sample to the wall of our workshop as a test run and it worked really well and was really easy to install. It comes away from the silicone material well and is very forgiving when fixing errors.”

Posting on Instagram, Turner Signs (@turnersignslimited) said:

“The school went for a bright bold design to brighten up the large empty spaces and rolled this out throughout the school from numerous wall wraps to window graphics to various types of signage.”

While Turner Signs has its own in-house design department, this project was so big it called on the services of Ginger Fox Studio for the artwork – in the school’s colours of red, grey, black and white – so it could concentrate on the printing and application elements of the job.

The printing and cutting stage took two days, using a Mimaki CJV150 integrated printer/cutter supplied by Sabur, with a further two days to complete the installation on-site.

Polar Grip from Drytac – the leading international manufacturer of self-adhesive materials for the large format print and signage market – was used throughout the project. A polymeric self-adhesive PVC film with a unique high-bond adhesive, Polar Grip offers five years’ durability in both indoor and outdoor conditions, ideal for digitally printed graphics in high-traffic areas such as school corridors.

Curt Turner, Director at Turner Signs, explains why the team chose the product:

“We needed strong adhesive for the wall graphics installed on brickwork, so Joe at Sabur Digital recommended Polar Grip. I applied a sample to the wall of our workshop as a test run and it worked really well and was really easy to install. It comes away from the silicone material well and is very forgiving when fixing errors.”

Turner Signs started in 1990 with roots in traditional sign-writing, with most work now covering vinyl signage and vehicle graphics. Curt Turner says the team will use Polar Grip again for other jobs, including potentially more wall graphics in another area of the Hall Cross Academy building.

Furthermore, Curt says he may print his own design for the Turner Signs workshop wall to use as a showcase for the business’s expertise and for Drytac Polar Grip.

“I will definitely use it again and recommend it to Turner Signs customers,” he says.
